I have no problem admitting that, it is indeed a repost from Reddit. But it’s also the only April fools that I found genuinly funny, and since I didn’t see it here I wanted to spread the joy :D

I thought about creditting it, but that’d kind of ruin the joke, plus I don’t really care about creditting Reddit anyway.

Developers or publisher seem to think its anti consumer practice to go on sale. So I knew something was off when I read post title.

It isn’t about visibility or sales, its about respecting the players who have already purchased the game. We don’t want to reward the people who hold off on buying the game, the game is a price we find reasonable, and this is the deal. If you think it is priced too high, then it is your choice to not purchase, and we hope that with enough time, and extra development, we will be able to convince you of its value.

Not having a sale ever is part of our philosophy. In short term, they are good and bring extra money, but we are targeting long term. I believe that searching for sales is wasted time, and people should decide on the price and value, but putting option of wasting time to search for deals or waiting seems like bad part of the equation. As an example I would like to mention Minecraft. I’m not aware of any sale of it :)

I used to respect that, same with them pricing the game at 20€ (not 19,99€, exactly 20€)… until they decided to increase the price over time to “adjust” it for inflation, instead of decreasing it like it is/used to be common practice, and then releasing a dlc that cost as much as the entire game, effectively doubling the price. 20€ was a fine price, give me a 10€ dlc on top of that and I’m still on board. But 64€ for the game and DLC? AAA price for no AAA value? Yeah, I’m out.

No. It just convinces me to pirate.

As someone who actively sails the high seas, the devs and publisher of Factorio don’t really hit any of the marks for why I would pirate something in the first place.

See, this is a toxic attitude. They are not charging an outrageous price. It’s not a subscription. It’s not an unfinished game. It’s not locked to the Epic Games store. It’s being actively maintained. It’s not being sold by a toxic publisher like EA. It’s an indie developer. Etc. etc.

It’s just a simple product, with a simple price. And you insist you have the right to obtain a copy of it without paying because they don’t offer discounts. This just isn’t reasonable. You don’t have a right to a copy of this game. It’s entertainment. It’s a product that those who work on it derive their lively hood from. It’s not food. It’s not shelter. It’s not healthcare.

Don’t worry, I’m sure this paragon of wisdom would come up with another excuse of why they would pirate the game even if it did have a discount.

Yeah, “I’m cheap/broke” is a reason to pirate, but so many people shy away from admitting it. Simply because they feel the need to morally justify it in some other way. I guess because saying “I took this shit for free. I could pay for it but I don’t wanna” doesn’t feel good.

That falls into the “not purchase” category. Regardless, their point still stands. If it’s not worth it for you at that price and you still want to play it, you might as well pirate it now because the price isn’t changing.

Honestly its one of those games where I recommend people pirate and if you like it or feel like you got a lot out of it and think they do deserve it, pay for it.

I recommend everyone pirate every game to try it, and if you feel that it is worth the asking price then pay that,or donate more. I was playing factorio for probably 7 years before i bought it because i couldnt afford the game. That being said I did buy it, because it is a game that I have installed on multiple computers over the years. If I have to redownload your game launcher, I typically just buy it now. Before companies start trying to take advantage of this, if I have to uninstall your launcher because of a bug or enshittification the chances of me ever playing your gake again go down dramatically, damn near zero unless you gather cultural relevance for a decade.

There are so many games that I don’t even feel the need to pirate. There are plenty of games on my wishlist that either currently are or will be on sale so I’d rather just buy one of those. And with piracy I already archived full collections for various older systems, there are probably hundreds of S tier games that I’ve never played that are just waiting for me. No more downloads, no more payments, no accounts. I could fuck off for years and just play emulated games.

One area where Factorio is tough to pirate is, they actually locked their mods behind a sort of DRM scheme where you have to confirm having it on Steam to download them. It’s a great game as just vanilla but I’m not sure how to get around that if you want to use mods.

Imagine if the dev actually did this. They’d probably make millions just from those that added it to their wishlist hoping it’ll go on sale someday and completely forgot about it. I know because I was one if those dudes but eventually caved after I found out it’ll never go on sale.

I have fifty steam accounts that own one copy of Factorio each and I’m just waiting to cash in.

I thought I was ruined at first.

I had it in my wishlist for years. I wasn’t exactly waiting for a discount, I was just playing other games. I finally bought it a month ago and already spent more than 100 hours. The game is addictive.

I was as well. Put off buying it for years, as I am the patient gamer who waits for deals. I caved after playing Satisfactory and still having the itch to build factories
